Deodorants protect you against odour while antiperspirants protect you against sweat and odour. The armpit has more sweat glands than any other body part. Sweat itself doesn’t produce a bad smell rather, the bacteria on the skin that breaks down sweat is the cause. If you want to prevent underarm sweating, then, antiperspirant is definitely the best. Aluminum is an element that prevents sweat and is found in antiperspirants hence, their effect of blocking sweat pores. Deodorants increase skin acidity which is a no go area for odour causing bacteria therefore, solely dealing with just odour and not sweat.
The Foods and Drugs Administration classifies deodorant as a cosmetic or beauty product while antiperspirant, as a drug intended for treatment and prevention of a disease or that which causes a change in the usual functioning of the body. This is due to their difference in function.
It is alleged that antiperspirants cause cancer however, the American Cancer Society says there is no clear link between cancer and the aluminum present in antiperspirants.
